Gut Health: Fiber vs Prebiotics
When it comes to defining prebiotics vs fiber the definitions can get hazy. What isn’t hazy is that you’re likely not getting enough of either.
Americans consume the least amount of dietary fiber and prebiotics in the world (other than the UK). In general terms prebiotics feed our gut microbiome. Fibers aid in digestion and stool formation. Some fibers are also prebiotics, and vice versa.
The health benefits of a high fiber, high prebiotic diet are innumerable (lower incidence of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, chronic disease, and even benefits on mood and mental health)
If it’s all still too confusing don’t worry. Just eat more fruits and vegetables.
